Jemma, a volunteer with Young Healthwatch, gives her feedback on a Safeguarding training session, facilitated by The Academy – Inspiring Futures, Central Bedfordshire Council.
The safeguarding training which was delivered to us was really informative, and I thought that the presenter did an amazing job addressing preconceived ideas around care and what constitutes as harm.
People often think that safeguarding and child protective services are only for the worst case scenarios. However, the training made me realise that there’s a much less dramatic escalation of care for most people and, in the majority of instances, safeguarding risks can be addressed either through universal or specialist services.
Furthermore, I found it really interesting to consider that often those who cause harm to children and young people may not be aware of it, despite stories we read about in the Media sensationalising this and portraying such people as ‘evil’.
Overall, the presentation was delivered in a way that was not only sensitive and easy-to-understand, but also had enough depth to allow us to gain a greater understanding of the topic. It was an invaluable opportunity, and I would love to go to similar sessions in the future so that I can stay informed about the safeguarding process, and support given to those at risk of harm.
