Caring can affect every part of life — your health, work, relationships, and finances. But as an unpaid Carer, you do have rights that can make a real difference.

Carers’ Rights Day is about making sure you know what support is available, and how to access it. Whether you’re new to caring or have been in your role for years, understanding your rights helps you feel more in control and confident to ask for what you need.

Under the Care Act 2014, you have the right to a Carer’s Assessment from your local authority — a chance to talk about how caring affects your life and what support might help you. You also have workplace rights, such as the ability to request flexible working and to take time off in emergencies. And from 2024, the new Carer’s Leave Act entitles you to one week of unpaid leave per year if you’re balancing work and care.

Many Carers also qualify for financial support such as Carer’s Allowance, and your GP should record you as a Carer so you can access annual health checks and free flu and Covid vaccinations.

Carers in Bedfordshire can help you understand these rights and use them. Here you can read their Carers’ Rights booklet.
