Susan Clarke, Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire volunteer, let’s us know.

Monday 16th March 2020 found me volunteering by serving on the till in British Heart Foundation Shop. I agreed to take on an extra slot, but 2 days later, British Heart Foundation shut all its shops.

Since then, the last 7 days has changed all lives at speed, greater than at any time in my life.  I watched the address from Boris that evening, and have done each time he has addressed the nation, constantly informing us of additional changes to all our lives. To be honest the depth of this international virus only fully sunk in on Saturday 21st March when it was definite schools would close, pubs, restaurants etc and to cancel all non-essential travel i.e. holidays.  We in the UK have been turned upside down and inside out by this virus attack.

From my personal point of view, I have been overwhelmed by people’s kindnesses.  Offers to touch base, to shop for me, to get prescription and generally keep us all looking out for each other.  Trouble is I feel such a fraud as I could do mine, and others shopping, but I know, and they know, I need to lie low for all our sakes.

At this point in time I realise I, along with the rest of us, have to think of plan b, c, d (and who knows how many more re-think plans), so I have decided to have a “start with” flexible plan.

Gardening is probably my first wish – just a little each day.  I enjoy feeding the birds, watching everything grow, and seeing the insects enjoy it all.

Systematically cleaning out a drawer or cupboard each day is something I put off, reluctantly I think this is the time to start.

I need to organise my menus better as I am not in a position to just pop out and get stuff.  May refer back to wartime cookery by Marguerite Pattern who could always make something out of nothing and still keep to good nutritional guidelines!!!

There are sewing projects that have been left in abeyance to do, and four ongoing knitting projects to complete.

This is for starters, because there is the usual running a home, cleaning and maintenance.
