Bedford Hospital has today (3 January) released the following statement:
Bedford Hospital is currently under sustained pressure for patients requiring admission to hospital. This pressure is similar to our neighbouring hospitals and reflects the national position.
As part of our winter preparedness, we had planned less routine operations over this winter and holiday period which is our usual busiest times. We have opened additional beds across the hospital in anticipation of this increased demand and supported this with increased quality rounds to ensure patients are safe and comfortable.
We ask those attending the hospital to bear with us as we prioritise those patients who are clinically unwell; and we ask the public to support us by only attending hospital if seriously unwell. Alternatives to attending hospitals are to contact NHS 111, visit your GP, pharmacist or local walk-in centre.
Many of our patients are elderly and require support after discharge, and we ask that relatives support us and their loved ones by helping us discharge patients that are medically well to leave hospital; to return to the most appropriate environment such as their own home or a community care home.
The hospital is working with all our partner agencies to ensure patients suitable to leave hospital are able to do so; and that those needed admitted are done so in a timely and safe manner.
